Building and sustaining multiracial, multicultural institutions is one of the defining leadership challenges of our time. These institutions—where at least 20 percent of leadership at every level are people of color and at least 40 percent are women and femmes—represent the demographic future of our democracy. Yet they are also some of the hardest institutions to lead, precisely because of how power operates. Rather than being all or nothing, power is often situational, requiring a strategic lens for how we access and share it inside and outside of our organizations.

This session will introduce the seven levers of power, a framework for understanding how different kinds of power are claimed, shared, and deployed inside organizations and across the sector. We’ll examine how executives and senior staff can use these levers to:

  • diagnose where power is being hoarded, obscured, or misused

  • design practical interventions to redistribute power while keeping the work and mission at the center

  • build resilience in institutions navigating the pressures of authoritarian backlash, division, and inequities

Participants will walk away with a clearer understanding of their responsibility as leaders and practical tools for putting insights about power into practice. Together, we will explore what it takes to lead institutions where sharing power across difference is the baseline and the practice field for building the democracy we need.
